Abstract

This article surveys major areas of recent Jingjiao research in order to assess the present state of the field and identify emerging directions in discovery and method. Organized principally by geographical and material settings, this article reviews scholarship on Turfan and the Tangchaodun site in Xiyu, Yishen lun, Xuting mishisuo jing, the Jingjiao Stele, P. 3847 and the writings listed in Zunjing, materials from Inner Mongolia and Quanzhou, and debates concerning manuscript authenticity and evidentiary status. Across these areas, recent scholarship moves between two complementary scales of analysis: broader reconstruction of the history of Christianity in China, the Church of the East, and Inner Asia, and close examination of individual manuscripts, inscriptions, objects, and archaeological sites. The article argues that recent advances have often come from testing broader historical reconstructions against the particular evidence on which they depend. This has encouraged a more differentiated assessment of manuscripts, texts, inscriptions, sites, and objects, while also expanding attention to their literary, theological, liturgical, and material dimensions. Questions of provenance, transmission, textual formation, authorship, classification, and authenticity have consequently been reopened. Together, these developments show a field that is increasingly interdisciplinary and methodologically self‑reflective, with a firmer basis for reconstructing the histories, texts, and religious lives of Christian communities within the wider Chinese world.
