在《彼得·隆巴德〈箴言集〉评论》中,奥卡姆讨论了痕迹与形象在引导人们了解三位一体时的不同用途,作为一个唯名论立场的学者,奥卡姆认为痕迹具有某种经验性,因此它具有实在性,它在逻辑上自然可以表征三位一体的实在区分,而形象则是基于某种生产原则而在概念上具有相似或表征,从而不具备实在性和实在区分。然而,为了保证神学教义的无误,奥卡姆把形象理解为是概念的实体化,从而给形象具有实体性的表征能力。这种概念的实体化虽然与奥卡姆的唯名论哲学观点相抵牾,但却保证了神学教义的正确,而这一内在张力在奥卡姆讨论“关系”(范畴)、神人二性等问题上也有所体现,尽管奥卡姆把关系同样看做是偶性的,并且论证了关系作为实体所导致的一系列荒谬逻辑结论,但为保证三位一体的实存,圣父圣子圣灵的关系中,关系必然作为实在的项。实际上,奥卡姆在面对同一议题时在神学和哲学视角不同态度昭示了中世纪信仰与理性互动的张力,这种内在的紧张与融合也正是中世纪哲学家们所共同要面对的议题。
